The quantity, quality and timeliness of mental health care services delivered to active and retired members of the U.S. military and their families has come under increasing scrutiny and criticism recently, as our nation struggles to understand and address the significant neurological, psychological and emotional consequences of serving in the modern military. The Military, Veterans and Families Task Group was formed in August, 2011 to gain a better understanding of the care and resources currently available to help our nation’s service personnel and their families cope with mental illness, identify gaps in the field and, starting within our own network, and chart a path to cope more effectively with this national crisis. To date, the group has made significant progress in compiling a comprehensive list of military-oriented programs offered at NNDC sites, and in gathering information about gaps in mental health care, education and access programs targeted at the military population.
