PTSD: Evidence-Based Psychotherapy and Emerging Treatment Approaches

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is estimated to affect 6.8% of Americans and 13%−20% of U.S. military personnel deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Societal impacts include psychiatric and physical comorbidities, which lead to work impairment and increasing health care costs. While treating PTSD with pharmacotherapy has accumulated some empirical support, the Institute of Medicine rates trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy as the only first-level treatment for PTSD.

The role of inflammatory cytokines in suicidal behavior: A systematic review

There is growing evidence that inflammatory mediators play a critical role in the pathophysiology of both major depression and suicidal behavior. Immunological differences have been reported in both major affective disorders and suicidal behavior. Specifically, increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines have been shown to correlate with the severity of depression and various cytokines have been identified as potentially important in understanding the pathophysiology of major affective disorders/suicidality.

Emotion perception and executive functioning predict work status in euthymic bipolar disorder

Functional recovery, including return to work, in Bipolar Disorder (BD) lags behind clinical recovery and may be incomplete when acute mood symptoms have subsided. We examined impact of cognition on work status and underemployment in a sample of 156 Euthymic-BD and 143 controls (HC) who were divided into working/not working groups. Clinical, health, social support, and personality data were collected, and eight cognitive factors were derived from a battery of neuropsychological tests.

A pilot randomized controlled trial of a depression & disease management program delivered by phone

Depression in medically ill patients occurs at twice the rate found in the general population. Though pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions for depression are effective, response to treatment and access to care are barriers for this population. A multidimensional telehealth intervention was designed to focus on these barriers by delivering a phone based intervention that addressed managing one's illness and coping emotionally.
